BURMESE CATS

Ideal lap cats, Burmese cats love people and are good with children and other animals. Burmese require more attention than many Western breeds; females are generally more bossy and demanding than males. Burmese have deep, rumbling voices and do not hesitate to use them.

Burmese Cats

History

In 1930 a retired Navy doctor procured a brown female cat named Wong Mau from Burma that turned out to be a Siamese-Burmese hybrid. Wong Mau was bred to a seal point Siamese. When one of her offspring was mated with her, three types of kittens resulted: some that were light in colour with typical dark Siamese points, some that were brown with darker points, and a third kind that was brown with no markings.

These unmarked brown kittens became the foundation stock of the modern Burmese breed in North America.

Special Requirements

Breed-related health problems include corneal dermoids (a small patch of skin and hair attached to the cornea, usually near the corner of the eye, that can be fixed surgically); cherry eye.

Burmese are extremely people-oriented; their personalities are almost dog-like in a tendency to shadow their owners and in a desire to give and receive affection.

Description

A Burmese is a stocky cat of medium size with good muscular development, short legs, and round feet.

There is a range in Burmese head and body type; the more compact cats with the rounder heads are seen in the show ring. Burmese have large, wide-set, golden, expressive eyes that are great pools of innocence and seductive appeal, irresistible in effect.

Burmese Cats

The Burmese coat is short, fine, and silky and lies close to the body. The solid, dark sable brown Burmese is in a league of its own, but a dilute division includes cats with lighter coats: champagne (light brown), blue (grey), and platinum (lilac).

While some breed registries recognize Burmese in a host of colours and patterns, others classify these cats as Foreign Burmese Their coats are very short, satin-like in texture, and generally require little grooming other than daily petting.

Characteristics and Temperament

As kittens, Burmese cats are quite lively. They often seem clumsy when they attempt feats beyond their capabilities and land on their rears with solid little thumps.

They will be playful well into adulthood. They are good with children, will tolerate the family dog, and if introduced to it at an early age as something pleasant, most will enjoy travelling in a car.
