EGYPTIAN MAU

The Egyptian Mau is a fascinating cat, not only because of its past history, but because of its delightful personality and striking appearance.

Egyptian Mau Head

The special traits of the Egyptian Mau are grace and elegance. This is the only natural breed of spotted cat and is considered rare.

History

The Mau (mau is the Egyptian word for cat) has been clearly identified in the artwork of the ancient Egyptians, leaving no question in the minds of many experts that the Egyptian Mau is indeed the cat domesticated from a spotted subspecies of the African Wild Cat by this unique culture.

The role of the Mau in the religion, mythology, and everyday life of the Egyptian conveys the degree of affection and respect in which these cats were held. They were worshipped as deities, cherished as pets, protected by laws, and mummified and mourned upon their death.

The Egyptian Mau is the oldest of the spotted domestic cats, a group which includes the ocicat and the Bengal.

Description

The Egyptian Mau has the distinction of being the only natural spotted breed of domestic cat.

The legs are thin and the back legs are longer than the front legs. The coat is very shiny and of medium length.

The Egyptian Mau has expressive gooseberry green eyes, (the colour of the eyes becomes stronger as the cat matures. They should become a vivid green)distinctive mascara lines, a worried expression on the face, and a graceful cheetah-like stride.

Maus come in five colours: silver, bronze, smoke, black and blue. The black and the blue Mau are not eligible for the show ring, but can be registered and like all other Maus, make excellent pets.

Care of this cat is very simple, just daily hand grooming will be all that is necessary.

Chacteristics and Temperament

This elegant and distinctive breed is devoted to family, both human and feline.

The Egyptian Mau is moderately active, very loyal, devoted, and intelligent. They talk in a soft, singing voice when happy and are also know to wag their tails while treading with their forepaws.
