Cats are naturally inquisitive creatures. While your home may not seem all that dangerous, plants, products, appliances, and furnishings found in the home can harm a cat.

Cat proof you're home, by making sure there are no possible hazards such as open windows or toxic substances, and try to keep exposed electrical cords to a minimum.

Common household items toxic to cats include antihistamines,antiseptics, aspirin, bleach, chocolate, cleaning products,disinfectants, insecticides, laxatives,lighter fluid, nail polish/ remover, perfume, sleeping pills, solvents and stain removers.

Although you cannot prevent all accidents, common sense and a careful check of your home can help you avoid some of them.




Some Signs of Household Poisoning Are:

  • convulsions
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal pain
  • pale gums / tongue
  • swollen tongue
  • refusal of food
  • continual vomiting

If your cat is displaying any one or combination of these symptoms it is possible it has ingested a toxic household item.

This is dangerous and medical attention should be sought immediately.
